Frequently Asked Questions

Microlocs General Info

What are Microlocs?

Mircolocs are smaller sized locs than traditional locs that can be established using a two-strand twist method or braided method. Human hair extensions can also be added to microlocs for more length and volume.

Microlocs VS Sisterlocks - What's the difference?

Microlocs don’t follow a specific grid pattern, parting size, or loc count, and can be installed by a microlocs specialist or loctician.

Sisterlocks are required to be installed by a licensed Sisterlock consultant, follow a specific trademark grid and parting size, must have a particular loc count, usually are tiny-sized locs, and are established only with the client's natural hair.

Who should get microlocs/microloc extensions?

Microlocs are great for individuals looking for low and less frequent maintenance, have low-density hair, want added length and fullness to their natural hair using extensions, and are looking for a permanent hairstyle change. Microlocs are best suited for anyone with types 3 or 4 kinky curly natural hair.

NOTE: We don’t recommend getting microlocs if your hair is damaged, straight, and/or chemically processed. If you are growing out your relaxer, we recommend cutting off any straight ends before your microlocs are established.

How do I know which sized microlocs to get?

Microlocs sizing will be determined mainly by your hair density (hair thickness), head circumference size, and personal preference. Tiny-sized microlocs are not recommended for individuals with low-density hair. During your virtual consultation, we will discuss what size is recommended for your hair.

NOTE: We don't guarantee a specific loc count or size, we will establish as many locs as your head can properly hold.

How long does my hair need to be for microlocs?

Your hair must be a minimum of 4 inches long to have your microlocs established by us.

Microloc Extensions

What are microloc extensions?

Mircoloc extensions are smaller-sized locs that can be established using a two-strand twist method or braided method and adding 100% afro kinky human hair extensions to each loc.

NOTE: Microloc extensions will eventually lose their twist/braid pattern over time as your hair transition into mature locs (e.g. bud, shrink, frizz). Microloc extensions can provide instant length and volume to your locs.

What hair do you use for your microloc extensions?

We use 100% afro kinky human hair that can be treated like your natural hair (e.g., washed, dyed, curled). The hair is included in the cost of your service. We are unable to use any client provided hair.

What types of microloc extensions do you offer?

We offer 2 types of microloc extension:

  • Microloc twist extensions are small-sized microlocs using 100% afro kinky human hair extensions then twisted using the two-strand twist method. Microloc extensions provide instant length and volume and are recommended for type 4 hair.

  • Microloc braid extensions are small-sized microlocs using 100% afro kinky human hair extensions then braided. Mircolocs extensions provide instant length and volume and are recommended for all hair types.

What length can I get my microloc extensions?

We offer neck length (6-8 inches) and shoulder length (10-14 inches) options. Please remember that afro-kinky human hair shrinks when dry like natural hair. Your hair length will vary when dry vs. wet.

Can you add extensions to my existing microlocs?

No. At this time we do not offer services to add extensions to existing microlocs or Sisterlocks. Only new microloc installations can be started with microloc extensions.

How do microloc extensions mature over time?

Microloc extensions mature gorgeously! Your hair will transition through different loc stages but these stages are slightly different from microlocs without extensions. The timeframe of each loc stage is different for every client. You will experience your microlocs bud, frizz, and shrink but your microlocs will elongate over time as the locs mature.

What is the estimated cost of starting and maintaining microloc extensions?

  • Microloc Extensions start at $1,600

  • The price increases based on the service and length you choose.

    • For example, 6-8 inches start at $1,600 while 12-14 inches start at $2,000.

Microlocs Maintenance and Haircare

When should I schedule my microlocs maintenance/retightening?

After your microlocs are installed it’s important to schedule your next appointment on the same day to guarantee booking availability. We highly recommend clients return for their retightening 4 weeks after their 1st installation and then between 4-8 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. The longer you wait in between retightening, the more you risk the overall health and appearance of your microlocs.

NOTE: It’s important to book your maintenance appointments ahead of time and on a consistent schedule to prevent extra costs, slippage, and your grid from being ruined.

How should I shampoo my microlocs?

We highly recommend using the Braid & Band method before shampooing your hair. This will help prevent slippage and unraveling. We recommend using Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo to clean and remove any products or oils from your hair. If this shampoo is drying out your hair and scalp, another great option is Carol’s Daughter Wash Day Delight with Rose Water. Both options are Sulfate-free shampoos that eliminate buildup and restore moisture in your hair. We recommend that you shampoo your hair every 2-3 weeks. We offer ongoing shampoo as an added service to your microloc maintenance appointments.

After cleaning your hair, use a microfiber towel to thoroughly dry your microlocs (DO NOT use anything cotton to dry your microlocs, this causes lint buildup.

Things that will cause your microlocs to experience slippage/unraveling

  • Oversaturating/spraying hair with any water-based products, such as

    • Rosewater

    • Witch Hazel

    • Aloe Vera Spray

  • Using oils & conditioner

  • Not braiding & banding during shampoo day

  • Skipping/prolonging retightening appointments

  • Swimming or exercising without proper hair care

Can I color my microlocs?

Short answer, we don't recommend it. It is risky to color your microlocs before your microlocs are fully matured. If you must color your hair, you will need to color your natural hair 72 hours (3 days) before getting your microlocs installed (discuss color options with stylists during your consultation). Your microlocs need time to set and mature, too much moisture can cause major slippage, and coloring your hair can change your hair texture and become too soft/loose.

NOTE: Do Not bleach your microlocs this will dry out your hair and cause breakage and/or hair loss.

Can I style my microlocs?

We recommend minimizing styling your hair for the first 6 months after your microlocs are established. The rule of thumb with microlocs is to leave them alone and let them flourish on their own. Too much styling/tension and manipulation (especially in the beginning stage) can cause breakage and slippage and essentially damage your microlocs.

If you do decide to style your microlocs after 6 months, we recommend not leaving any style in (updos, braided/twisted styles, Bantu knots) for longer than 4-5 days.
